Turkish Coffee Fortune Telling

               
 "Do not believe what the coffee grounds tell you, but do not refrain yourself from doing it"

Love, success, money, fortune: the art of reading coffee grounds is as old as coffee itself. Coffee fortune telling was born out of Turkish coffee and is an inseparable part of the pleasure and conversation associated with coffee. This ritual spread to Europe at the end of the 17th century when it became fashionable in Paris, from where it spread to Austria, Hungary and Germany. 

The ritual

After the coffee is drunk, the cup is placed upside down on its saucer. The person who drank the coffee should mix the coffee grounds and turn the coffee cup upside down over the cup’s saucer. Some people make a wish while placing the tip of their finger on the bottom of the cup. The cup is turned over once again, and is now ready to be read by the fortune teller. It is customary that the fortune teller pronounces the phrase: "may the future be in accordance with your wishes" before starting the reading.  The person whose fortune is to be read says, "Let my fortune match my state".
